Brikama, West Coast Region — Disaster stakeholders issued a stark warning January 22: Persons with disabilities face deathly risks in emergencies due to exclusion from planning, early warnings, and evacuations, demanding immediate inclusion as a legal mandate. Stakeholders in disaster risk management called for full inclusion of persons with disabilities in preparedness, response, and recovery, warning that exclusion exposes this vulnerable group to disproportionate risks. The European Union (EU), in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), on 14 January 2026 officially launched a 30-month disability-inclusive project aimed at empowering children with disabilities in The Gambia through education, technology and play. The project, titled “Disability Inclusive Pathways: Empowering Children with Disabilities Through Education, Technology, and Play,” will be implemented in 12 selected mainstream schools across the Kanifing Municipality, West Coast Region and North Bank Region. It seeks to address persistent barriers faced by children with disabilities, including stigma, inaccessible school infrastructure, limited assistive technologies and inadequate teacher training. GFD Launches Sensitisation Tour to Promote Inclusive Education

The Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD) in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has embarked on a nationwide sensitisation tour to encourage parents of children with disabilities to enroll them in school. The tour, supported by the European Union (EU), aims to promote inclusive education and provide accessibility measures for children with disabilities. The sensitisation team, comprising representatives from GFD, National Human Rights Commission, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, National Organisation for Disables and Ophans (NODO), and Special Olympics, conducted radio talk shows and live phone-in programs to raise awareness on the importance of inclusive education. Njie Catholic Relief Services (CRS), in collaboration with GFD and with funding from the European Union, is implementing a 30-month disability-inclusive education project aimed at improving access, protection and participation of children with disabilities into mainstream schools in The Gambia. The project, “Disability Inclusive Pathways,” officially began on 1 March 2025 and will run until 30 September 2027. An important activity—a two-day “Parenting Without Violence” training—was held from 15–16 December 2025 at the Ocean Bay Hotel, bringing together leaders of the Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD) and affiliated Organisations of Persons with Disabilities.
